The North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association has published a reference guide for current firearms laws in North Carolina. It will be used by Sheriffs around the state to train their Officers, and likely used by other law enforcement agencies as well. It is highly recommended everyone read this to gain a better understanding of our laws as well as how law enforcement personnel are trained. It can be accessed HERE.

F is for False: Washington Post Fact Check Refutes Leading Gun Control Talking Point
It has become practically mandatory for any firearm prohibitionist to preface gun control rhetoric with the assertion: “Gun violence is the leading cause of death of children.” It’s a favorite of Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, the White House Briefing Room, and just about every gun control advocate and anti-gun media outlet you could name (for example: here, here, here, here, here, here, and here, to cite merely a few examples). As we have pointed out time and time and time again, however, it’s simply not true. Now, the Washington Post’s own fact checker has weighed in on the matter and has grudgingly admitted that the statement is only true if “children” include adults. “When you focus only on children – 17 years and younger –,” the Post article states, “motor vehicle deaths (broadly defined) still rank No. 1.”
Does the Gun Industry Have First Amendment Rights?
Gun control advocates are intent on destroying the First Amendment rights of the firearms community.
On November 3, the U.S. Supreme Court granted cert in National Rifle Association of America v. Vullo. In it, NRA alleges New York officials used their regulatory authority to target the organization to suppress its First Amendment-protected pro-Second Amendment advocacy. In April 2022, a trio of gun control groups filed a petition with the Federal Trade Commission claiming that any suggestion by the firearms industry that firearms provide protection to their owners or make their homes safer is tantamount to false advertising and should be curbed. In July 2022, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed AB2571, which purports to ban all firearms-related advertising that a minor (those under the age of 18) might find attractive.

NRA-Backed Lawsuit Challenging Illinois’ Semi-Automatic and Standard-Capacity Magazine Ban Goes to SCOTUS.
Today a petition was filed with the United States Supreme Court, asking it to hear the NRA-backed challenge to Illinois’ ban on popular semi-automatic firearms and standard-capacity magazines.
The lawsuit was filed as soon as the bill was signed into law. It got off to a strong start by securing a preliminary injunction that prevented the law from taking effect. But the Chicago-based Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals reversed that, holding that these commonly owned firearms and magazines are not “arms” under the Second Amendment. That decision could not go unchallenged—especially coming just a year after the Supreme Court decided New York Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen.
More Canadian Adults have a Firearms License than Play Hockey
Despite – or perhaps, because of – the relentless campaign being waged against responsible gun owners by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government, the number of Canadians with gun licenses has hit a new high. As of December 2023, there were over 2.35 million Canadians with an RCMP-vetted Possession and Acquisition License (PAL). According to the thegunblog.ca website, the “number of PAL holders rose by 87,694 in 2023, the biggest annual advance since at least 2003,” and, with the exception of the 2020 pandemic year, the number of licenses “has been climbing since 2009… More Canadian adults have a firearm license than play hockey.”
Anti-gun Democrats, Media Collaborators, Concoct Phony “Scandal” to Ban Ammunition
Every so often, some “brilliant” firearm prohibitionist comes up with the “insight” that if gun bans are unconstitutional, ammunition should be targeted instead. This is akin to the old tactic of cracking down on ink and paper supplies as a means of curtailing First Amendment expression and is just as unconstitutional. We saw an attempt by the government to ban one of the most popular types of ammunition for America’s most popular rifle during the Obama/Biden administration, when ATF suddenly (and inaccurately) reclassified M855 rounds as “armor piercing.” That overreaching move not only failed to go the distance, it was followed by the resignation of the ATF’s then director, B. Todd Jones. Now, as Gun Control, Inc. continues to recycle the failed executive gun control schemes of the past, another attempt is underway to ban supposed “military grade” ammunition from public sale.
In Chicago, Failure Appears to be the Only Option
When it comes to finding ways to fail spectacularly at responding to the problem of violent crime, few cities compare to Chicago. In spite of ample evidence that there are clear solutions to effectively addressing those who are most responsible for the violence plaguing our country, Chicago would apparently rather explore programs probably best described as criminal justice experimentation.
We’ve discussed the Windy City’s experience with non-traditional forms of crime deterrence, where they have tried paying former (it is hoped) criminals to use their expertise and connections with the criminal world to try to dissuade (again, it is hoped) others from engaging in illicit activity.
Other “responses” to crime include one from 2021, when, in an apparent admission that the city could not stop violent criminals, a program was implemented to install hundreds of “bleeding control kits” in public buildings throughout Chicago. We’ve also reported about Chicago Alderman Michele Smith (D-43) promoting a “crime-fighting” program where citizens are encouraged to get whistles, then blow them if they come across a “suspicious situation or witness a crime.”

Canada’s Guns – A Step Closer to Confiscation and Destruction
Like the COVID-19 pandemic, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s 2020 “assault weapon” ban and confiscation program (“buyback”) will mark its fourth anniversary this spring.
His Liberal government has previously shared little information about the anticipated costs, timing and mechanics of how this is expected to be enforced. As recently as last July, a Firearms Buyback Program (FBP) overview page at the Public Safety Canada website indicated that “FBP employs twenty-four employees with an operating budget of approximately $5.4M.” It cites an incorrect amnesty expiry date of October 2023 and even so, describes a strangely compacted timeframe in 2023 for initiation, with the “collection of business stock beginning before the end of the year, and to get started with individual collection in the second half of 2023.” “Key partners” for program implementation include “Provinces, Territories and Municipalities,” with the FBP also working “with international partners, including the New Zealand Police, to inform program design development and apply lessons learned from their buyback experience.”

Federal Legislation Introduced to Ban “Gas Operated Semiautomatic” Firearms
Joe Biden has long insisted he would ban what he calls “assault weapons” and has enlisted a motley succession of extreme anti-gun legislators to aid in that effort. Now, Senators Angus King (IND-ME) and Martin Heinrich (D-NM) have joined that dubious collective by introducing perhaps the most sweeping gun prohibition bill of the 21st Century. Both had voted against prior versions of federal “assault weapons” bans, making their debut effort into the genre notable not only for its scope but as a paradigmatic in-office flip-flop. But, at the end of the day, their bill is just like its predecessors in targeting law-abiding gun owners, while leaving armed criminals unperturbed.
This bill, however, targets semiautomatic firearms of all kinds and configurations, presumptively banning them as a class, and then exempting some of them. The usual magazine ban is also included, capping legal capacity of most types of ammunition feeding devices at 10 rounds.
